Water damage is one of the most common and costliest disasters your home can experience, costing billions of dollars annually. 

Properly maintaining a home is one of the best ways to prevent water damage from water disasters.

The following are some helpful tips:

1. Reseal your basement

2. Make sure water drains away from the building

3. Install a backwater valve.

4. Inspect appliance hoses and faucets

5. Inspect showers and tubs

6. When away on vacation, shut off the water supply to the washing machine

7. Know the location of the main water shut-off valve in your home

8. Install an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system

9. Check plumbing and heating pipes

10. Caulk and seal windows

11. Inspect your roof

12. Check your downspouts

13. Check sprinklers and irrigation systems

14. Install gutter guards

15. Store off-season and other bulk belongings in waterproof bins

16. Never store valuables or memorabilia where there is risk of destruction from water

17. Keep belongings stored on shelving off the floor in the basements

18. Keep an up to date home inventory
